Stress and anxiety in pets

Stress is a common problem in both dogs and cats and can occur at any time or be a continuous problem in some more sensitive animals. Many dogs and cats find it difficult to adapt to change and this can be the major source for many animals. Something like moving a piece of furniture can be a stressful event for some.

How do I know if my pet is stressed?
Although our pets can't tell us how they are feeling they can change their behaviour which lets us know something is not quite right. Some signs of stress of more commonly noted than others, common expressions are:
Restlessness or pacing
Excessive whining, barking or calling
Destructive chewing
House soiling
Urine marking
Scratching
Aggressive behaviour
Unwilling to socialise/hiding
Panting or trembling
Habits such as excessive licking or grooming
