| Zylkene Equine - for horses that find life stressful
Zylkene Equine
What is Zylkène Equine?
Zylkène Equine is a natural product that has been developed to help horses and ponies overcome difficult or stressful situations. Zylkène Equine favours rapid and smooth adaptation to changing situations.
Zylkène has been proven to manage stress in dogs and cats and is widely used in small animal practice.
Zylkène Equine contains -casozepine, derived from the milk protein casein. -casozepine causes partial agonism of GABA receptors1 which are involved in the regulation of emotional states.
Zylkène Equine has not been associated with side effects such as sedation, disinhibition or memory loss at the recommended level of daily intake.
Zylkène Equine is manufactured to human pharmaceutical standards (GMP) and is:
* hypoallergenic * preservative free * lactose free
In controlled tests with 30 mares over a 3 week period which including stressful events including isolation stress and a bridge crossing test, Zylkene was shown to have a beneficial effect on horses experiencing these stressful situations.
Causes of stress in horses
Stress can be caused by many common situations including:
* prolonged confinement e.g. box rest * a new environment * new people or new horses * weaning * 'breaking' or training * travelling * clipping * vet, farrier or dentist visits
Horses, like humans, experience apprehension and stress in certain situations. Some degree of stress is normal, however if stress becomes excessive it can lead to behavioural problems.
Together with behavioural training, Zylkène Equine can help horses cope with challenging situations and facilitate adaptation to change.
How do horses react to stress?
Most horses will react instinctively in the face of perceived danage to escape or flee from the threat and protect themselves. If they are unable to get away they might respond with aggression. However, some horses may withdraw into themselves and it may not be apparent that they are stressed. Horses that are stressed over a prolonged period of time can develop behavioural problems such as box walking, weaving or a change in temperament.
What can I do for my horse?
If you think your horse is showing signs of stress, first check with your vet to make sure this isn't due to a medical reason. Otherwise consider using Zylkene Equine along with recommendations including training or environmental changes.
How is Zylkene Equine used?
Zylkene Equine is an apple flavoured, easy to give powder. The contents of the sachet should be mixed with a small amount of food. The average daily intake required is 2mg/kg and should be given once daily.

Short Term Stress For anticipated stressful situations such as travelling or teeth rasping, Zylkene Equine is mixed into the horses feed from two days prior to and for the duration of the stress.
Long Term Stress For chronic ongoing behavioural problems, Zylkene Equine can be used on a continuous basis.
The horses behaviour should be re-evaluated after a 20 day course, ideally with concurrent training and behavioural therapy, and the daily intake should be modified if required. The period of use can be extended after the first course if required.

CASE STUDIES
HIGHLY STRUNG ARAB reacts to stress by weaving or box-walking very aggressively, throwing himself about, charging around the field, shaking, vocalising and sweating.
"Within 2 weeks of given him Zylkène, he was able to remain calm when exposed to low grade stresses and his reaction to major stress was much less extreme e.g. no sweating seen. From the third week onwards, he was hardly reacting negatively to minor stresses and his reaction to major stresses was much less severe.
Since starting Zylkène, Alfy is much more able to cope with everyday life and we are both much happier and relaxed."

WELSH SECTION D with history of panicky loading following an accident
"I have used Zylkène with great success to improve Charlie's ability to cope with the stress of loading. He is much more relaxed and breathes normally when led onto the trailer. The main improvement is he no longer panics and rushes backwards dangerously when the back bar is put in place. He will now walk straight on and stand calmly whilst all the bars and ramps are fastened. I have tried loading recently without the use of Zylkène and he reverted back to his nervous and panicky behaviour as soon as he approached the trailer. I have no doubt that Zylkène has made loading Charlie safer and less stressful for both of us."

TYPICAL HIGHLY STRUNG, OVER-REACTIVE TB who is scared of her own shadow, and therefore not always pleasant to hack out.
"I tried her on Zylkène for two weeks and was amazed at the difference. One of the first things that the yard manager commented on was how relaxed and cuddly she had become in the stable, and how much less reactive she was to handle from the ground. As a rider I definitely saw a reduction in her spooking on hacks. All in all I felt that Zylkène was a great success, and as a rider/owner would not hesitate to use it again for the next stressful time, and as a vet I would not hesitate to recommend it to my clients."
